Given a quasi-projective variety \(X\) defined over \(\mathbb C\) and an automorphism \(\sigma \in \text{Aut} (\mathbb C)\) of \(\mathbb C\), the conjugate \(X^\sigma\) is obtained by appying \(\sigma\) to the coefficients of the polynomial defining \(X\). Serre gave an example where the topological spaces \(X (\mathbb C)\) and \(X^\sigma (\mathbb C)\) are not homeomorphic. In this paper the author gives examples of connected Shimura varieties that are not homeomorphic to a conjugate of itself by an automorphism of \(\mathbb C\).
