Based on classical mechanics, this volume presents a unified approach to applied mechanics and mechatronics. Particular emphasis is placed on theory, modeling, and control of gyroscopic devices, including military applications. Chapter 1 deals with dynamics of electromechanical systems, henceforth referred to as mechatronic systems. The constitutive relations of elements of electric circuits, the Hamilton's principle and Lagrange equations of electrical systems, various mechatronic transducers, magnetic levitation, and the dynamics of a string-type generator are here analyzed. The dynamics of a rigid spherical body is studied in Chapter 2 with emphasis on applications. The kinematics of a rigid body is also revisited, including Euler and Cardan angles. The gyroscopic effect is outlined. Chapter 3 presents the theory of gyroscopes. The following gyrosopic devices are considered: the directional gyroscope, the stabilized gyroscopic platform, the laser gyroscope, the fiber-optic gyroscope, the piezoelectric gyroscope, the fork gyroscope, and the microgyroscope with spinning disk and vibrating ring. Chapter 4 is devoted to the dynamics and the control of gyroscopes. The authors examine here a gyroscope on a movable platform, the motion control of gyroscope axis in a closed system, and the selection of optimal parameters of a gyroscopic system with a fixed axis. The final Chapter 5 describes the gyroscopic control in self-guidance systems of flying objects. The gyroscope control in an unmanned aerial vehicle and a gyroscope in a guided aerial bomb are studied as examples. This volume is addressed to graduate and postgraduate students, researchers and instructors from the field of mechanics. The presented advanced applications could be of particular interest to engineers and designers in the mechatronic industry.
