The authors deal with \(n\)-dimensional dynamic equations \[ x^\Delta=f(x)\quad\tag{*} \] on time scales \({\mathbb T}\) being unbounded from above and with bounded graininess. A criterion for the exponential stability of an equilibrium \(\bar x\) to \((\ast)\) in terms of the eigenvalues for the linearization \(Df(\bar x)\) is given; its proof is based on an ambient Lyapunov function. Moreover, a condition for instability is also given. Both are formulated in terms of the location of the spectrum for \(Df(\bar x)\) with respect to the Hilger unit circle. The results are illustrated using three planar examples. An appendix on time scales concludes the paper. The critical situation with eigenvalues on the Hilger unit circle has been considered by the reviewer in Invariant foliations and stability in critical cases [Adv. Difference Equ. 2006, Article ID 57043 (2006; Zbl 1139.39034)].
