The author studies the time global behavior of solutions to the degenerate drift-diffusion system in \(\mathbb R^N\), \(n \geq 3\), \[ \begin{alignedat}{2} \partial_t\rho - \Delta\rho^\alpha+ \kappa\nabla\cdot(\rho\Delta\psi) &= 0, &&\quad t > 0,\;x\in\mathbb R^N,\\ -\Delta\psi&= \rho, &&\quad t > 0,\;x \in\mathbb R^N,\\ \rho(0,x) &= \rho_0(x) \geq 0,&&\quad x \in\mathbb R^N, \end{alignedat} \] where \(\alpha > 1\) and \(\kappa = \pm 1\). The value of the exponent \(\alpha\) plays an essential role for the global existence and finite time blow-up. Namely, there exists a critical exponent that classifies the global behavior of weak solution. In the present paper, the critical exponent \(\alpha_* = 2n/(n + 2)\) is considered, and the solution \(U\) of \[ \begin{alignedat}{2} -\frac{2n}{n-2}\Delta U^{\frac{n-2}{n+2}} &= U, &&\quad x \in\mathbb R^N,\\ U(x) &\geq 0, &&\quad x \in\mathbb R^n, \end{alignedat} \] is used to classify the global existence of the weak solution and finite blow-up of the solution. The result reads aw follows: Let \((\rho,\psi)\) be a weak solution of the problem. If \(\|\rho_0\|_{\alpha_*}< \|U\|_{\alpha_*}\), then the weak solution \((\rho,\psi)\) exists globally in time. If \(\|\rho_0\|_{\alpha_*} > \|U\|_{\alpha_*}\), then the weak solution does not exist globally in time.
