Let \(({\mathcal H},[\cdot,\cdot])\) be a Krein space with a nontrivial fundamental symmetry (f.s.)~\(J\). Then, in the corresponding Hilbert space \(({\mathcal H},[J \cdot,\cdot])\), there is a closed symmetric operator \(S\) with deficiency indices \((2,2\)) which commutes with \(J\). The authors of the paper under review describe different types of \(J\)-selfadjoint extensions of \(S\) and show, in particular, that there exists at least one such extension with empty resolvent set iff there exists an additional f.s.\ \(R\) in \({\mathcal H}\) for which \(SR=RS\), \(JR= -RJ\) or, equivalently, if \(S\) commutes with an arbitrary element of the Clifford algebra generated by operators \(J\) and \(R\). In this case, if the characteristic function of \(S\) is not identically equal to zero, they show that those f.s.\ \(C\) which commute with \(S\) are characterized by the equality \(C=(\cosh \chi)J+(\sinh\chi)J R[\cos\omega +i(\sin\omega)J]\) with \(\chi\in\mathbb{R}\), \(\omega\in[0,2\pi)\). Finally, applying theoretical considerations, they discuss some examples, such as indefinite Sturm-Liouville operators and a one-dimensional Dirac operator with point interaction.
