First the authors consider finite (thick) classical generalized quadrangles admitting an automorphism group which is point-regular, i.e., sharply transitive on points. There are just two such quadrangles, and three possible groups (two of these groups have been overlooked in [\textit{W. M. Kantor} and \textit{R. A. Liebler}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 271, 1--71 (1982; Zbl 0514.20033)], Corollary 5.12). Let \(Q\) be the generalized quadrangle of order \((q-1, q+1)\) obtained by Payne derivation from the symplectic quadrangle \(W(3,q)\) of order \(q\). For \(q\) not a prime, the authors construct point-regular automorphism groups of \(Q\) that are not isomorphic to the elation group inherited from \(W(3,q)\). For \(q=4\) there are 58 conjugacy classes (and 30 isomorphism classes) of point-regular automorphism groups of \(Q\). The final section provides counterexamples to some conjectures in [\textit{S. De Winter} and \textit{K. Thas}, Des. Codes Cryptography 47, No.~1--3, 237--242 (2007; Zbl 1185.51007); \textit{S. De Winter, K. Thas} and \textit{E. Shult}, ``Singer quadrangles'', Oberwolfach Preprint OWP 2009-07].
