It is proved that there is a sequence \((w_n(x,y))\) of elements of the free group \(F\) on \(x\) and \(y\) with the following property: if \(G\) is a finitely generated linear group and \(R(G)\) is the soluble radical of \(G\), then \(g\in R(G)\) if and only if \(w_n(g,h)=1\) for all \(h\in G\) and all sufficiently large integers \(n\). Moreover the sequence \((w_n)\) is convergent in \(\widehat F\), the profinite completion of \(F\).
