Let \(L\) be the formal differential operator defined by \[ Ly(t)=Jy'(t)-Qy(t),\quad t\in[0,+\infty), \] where \(J\) is the \(2n\times 2n\)-matrix which defines the canonical symplectic form on \(\mathbb{R}^{2n}\) and \(Q(t)\) are selfadjoint complex \(2n\times 2n\)-matrices, locally integrable with respect to \(t\). The author studies the minimal and maximal operators generated by \(L\) in the weighted space \(L^{2}_{W}\), \(W\) being a locally integrable nonnegative matrix-valued function. He proves that if a definiteness condition is fulfilled, i.e., if \[ \int^{t}_{0} {y^{\ast}(s,\lambda)W(s)y(s,\lambda)}\,ds > 0,\quad \forall t>0, \] for any nontrivial solution of the equation \(Ly =\lambda Wy\), then the minimal operator is symmetric and its adjoint coincides with the maximal operator. These theorems improve results obtained by \textit{A. M. Krall} [SIAM J. Math. Anal., 20, 664--700 (1989; Zbl 0683.34008)]. The equality of the deficiency indices is also proved, if \(W\) and \(Q\) satisfy some additional conditions.
