The author considers a generalized Clifford algebra \(\mathcal C l_{n}(F)\) over an arbitrary field \(F\) of characteristic not equal to two. He proves that there is a universal invertible matrix \(P_{n }\) over \(\mathcal C l_{n}(F)\) such that \[ P_n^{-1}D_a P_n= \phi (a)\in F^{2^n\times 2^n} \] for all \(a\in \mathcal C l_{n}(F)\), where \(D_{a }\) is a diagonal matrix consisting of \(a\) or its conjugate and \(\phi (a)\) is a matrix representation of \(a\) over the field \(F\). In other words, every Clifford number \(a\) is an eigenvalue of the matrix \(\phi (a)\).
