Let \(\mu\) and \(\nu\) be normal functions on \((0,1)\) and let \(T_g\) be the extended Cesàro operator in terms of the symbol \(g\in H(B)\). Denote by \({\mathcal R}g=\sum_{j=1}^n z_j{{\partial g}\over {\partial z_j}}\) the radial derivative of \(g\). Also, let \(0< p\), \(q\leq\infty\) and consider the mixed norm spaces \(H(p,q,\mu)\) and \(H(p,q,\nu)\). The main result of this paper is as follows: (i) \(T_g\) is a bounded operator from \(H(p,q,\mu)\) to \(H(p,q,\nu)\) if and only if \[ \sup_{z\in B}\,{\nu(|z|)\over\mu(|z|)} (1-|z|^2)\,{\mathcal R}g(z)<\infty; \] (ii) \(T_g\) is a compact operator from \(H(p,q,\mu)\) to \(H(p,q,\nu)\) if and only if \[ \lim_{|z|\to 1}\,{\nu(|z|)\over\mu(|z|)} (1-|z|^2)\,{\mathcal R}g(z)<\infty. \] [Editor's remark: A similar theorem was already proved by \textit{Z.\,J.\ Hu} in Proc.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 131, No.\,7, 2171--2179 (2003; Zbl 1054.47023).]
