The authors consider linear integro-differential equations of Fredholm type with appropriate initial or boundary conditions. The kernels, coefficient functions and forcing functions of the equations are assumed to have weak singularities or exhibit similar types of nonsmooth behaviour at the endpoints of the interval of interest. The first part of the paper is devoted to a study of the smoothness properties of the solutions of such equations. Based on these analytical results, a convergence analysis of a piecewise polynomial collocation method with a graded mesh is provided in the second part of the paper. In particular, superconvergence phenomena are investigated, and numerical examples are given in support of the theoretical findings.
