This text is aimed at graduate scientists and engineers and intends to provide a theoretical underpinning to modelling reliability and the analysis of life data. There is one chapter that contains several datasets and some advice on consulting, however the majority of the book concerns the mathematical development of the area that requires a background in probability and mathematical statistics including measures. Each chapter includes a set of exercises without solutions and there are some practical examples used to illustrate the concepts. Coherent systems are discussed and a number of lifetime distributions (there is a whole chapter on the Weibull distribution) are considered including cumulative damage distributions. Both parametric and nonparametric estimation are discussed. There are chapters on damage processes, including the Poisson and renewal processes, service life of structures, strength and durability and maintenance of systems.
