Stable minimal surfaces in 3-manifolds minimize area up to second-order for any compactly supported smooth deformation. Considering stability problems on minimal surfaces, the author uses test functions which are constructed using both meromorphic maps and harmonic forms (chapter 2). The topics he deals with (chapters 3--6) are: 3. Stability of one-sided minimal surfaces; 4. Index one minimal surfaces; 5. Estimates of the index of minimal surfaces; 6. Stability of constant mean curvature surfaces. There is a wide range of results, for instance: There are no non-orientable complete stable minimal surfaces in Euclidean space \(\mathbb{R}^3\) (Theorem 9). The helicoid and the Scherk doubly periodic surfaces are the only properly embedded non-planar area minimizing surfaces mod 2 in the quotients of \(\mathbb{R}^3\) by one or two linearly independent translations, respectively (Theorem 13). Closed index one orientable minimal surfaces immersed in an orientable 3-manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature have genus \(\geq 3\) (Theorem 15). Compact connected orientable two-sided constant mean curvature surfaces, immersed in a 3-manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature, have genus \(\geq 3\) if they are stable (Th 19).
