A function \(f\) in the unit ball \(\mathcal{B}\) of the algebra \(H^\infty\) of bounded holomorphic functions on the unit disc \(\mathbb{D}\) is called \(\mathcal{B}\)-universal if, for some sequence \((\phi_n)_n\) of holomorphic self maps on \(\mathbb{D}\), its orbit \((f \circ \phi_n)_n\) is locally uniformly dense in \(\mathcal{B}\). \textit{F. Bayart, P. Gorkin, S. Grivaux} and \textit{R. Mortini} [Ark. Mat. 47, No. 2, 205--229 (2009; Zbl 1195.30069)] gave a description of those sequences \((\phi_n)_n\) of self maps with \(|\phi_n(0)| \rightarrow 1\) for which there exists \(f \in \mathcal{B}\) with dense orbit with respect to \((\phi_n)_n\). In the present paper, continuing his work in [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 71, No. 2, 181--197 (2011;1275.47052)], the author proves that \(f \in \mathcal{B}\) is \(\mathcal{B}\)-universal for some sequence \((\phi_n)_n\) of holomorphic self maps on \(\mathbb{D}\) if and only if there is a sequence \((z_k)_k\) in \(\mathbb{D}\), not necessarily converging to the boundary, such that \((1- |z_k|^2) |f'(z_k)| \rightarrow 1\). Other characterizations are presented. Several interesting examples are given, e.g., a finite Blaschke product is \(\mathcal{B}\)-universal for some sequence \((\phi_n)_n\) of holomorphic self maps on \(\mathbb{D}\) if and only if it is a conformal self map. There exists interpolating Blaschke products with infinitely many zeros that are not \(\mathcal{B}\)-universal for any sequence \((\phi_n)_n\) of holomorphic self maps on \(\mathbb{D}\). An application to nonlinear superposition operators with dense range is also proved. In the final section, the author presents a new class of functions that do not generate minimal invariant subspaces for the hyperbolic composition operators in \(H^2\). These results are related to recent works by E. Gallardo-Gutiérrez and P. Gorkin.
