Let \(T: \ell^r \to \ell^r\) (\(r>1\), \(r=p,q\), \(1/p+1/q=1\)) be a linear operator represented by a generalized integral with a kernel \(k_r(x,y)\) satisfying \(k_q(x,y)=k_p(y,x)>0\) (\(x, y \in (0,\infty)\)). This means that \((Ta)(n)=\sum_{m=1}^\infty k_q(m,n)a_m\) for \(a=(a_m)\in \ell^p\), \(n\in\mathbb{N}\). The author gives a characterization of the norm of \(T\). As an application, some Hilbert type inequalities with best constant factors are presented.
