Let \(U\) and \(V\) be bounded linear operators on Banach spaces \(X\) and \(Y\), respectively. The operators \(U\) and \(V\) are called Schur coupled (SC) if there exists an operator matrix \(\begin{bmatrix} A & B\\ C & D \end{bmatrix}\) on \(X\dot{+}Y\) with \(A\) and \(D\) invertible, such that \(U=A-BD^{-1}C\) and \(V=D-CA^{-1}B\). The operators \(U\) and \(V\) are called equivalent after extension (EAE) if there exist Banach spaces \(X_0\) and \(Y_0\) and invertible operators \(E\) mapping \(Y\dot{+}Y_0\) onto \(X\dot{+}X_0\) and \(F\) mapping \(X\dot{+}X_0\) onto \(Y\dot{+}Y_0\) such that \(\begin{bmatrix} U & 0 \\ 0 & I_{X_0} \end{bmatrix} = E \begin{bmatrix} V & 0 \\ 0 & I_{Y_0} \end{bmatrix} F\). The operators \(U\) and \(V\) are called matricially coupled (MC) if there exists an invertible operator \(\begin{bmatrix} U_{11} & U_{12} \\ U_{21} & U_{22} \end{bmatrix}\) on \(X\dot{+}Y\) with inverse \(\begin{bmatrix} V_{11} & V_{12} \\ V_{21} & V_{22} \end{bmatrix}\) on \(X\dot{+}Y\) such that \(U=U_{11}\) and \(V=V_{22}\). It is known that MC \(\Rightarrow\) EAE [\textit{H. Bart} et al., Topics in operator theory systems and networks, Workshop Rehovot/Isr. 1983, Oper. Theory, Adv. Appl. 12, 39--73 (1984; Zbl 0543.45002)], EAE \(\Rightarrow\) MC [\textit{H. Bart} and \textit{V. E. Tsekanovskii}, Operator theory and complex analysis. Proceedings of a workshop, held in Sapporo, Japan, June 11--14, 1991. Basel: Birkhäuser. Oper. Theory, Adv. Appl. 59, 143--160 (1992; Zbl 0807.47003)], SC \(\Rightarrow\) EAE [\textit{H. Bart} and \textit{V. E. Tsekanovskii}, ``Schur complements and strong versions of matricial coupling and equivalence after extension'', Report Series Econometric Institute Erasmus University Rotterdam, Report 9262/A (1992)]. The remaining implication EAE \(\Rightarrow\) SC is known for matrices [\textit{H. Bart} and \textit{V. E. Tsekanovskii}, Linear Algebra Appl. 197--198, 651--658 (1994; Zbl 0795.15006)], for Fredholm operators between Hilbert spaces, and for Fredholm operators of zero index between Banach spaces [\textit{H. Bart} et al., Linear Algebra Appl. 399, 203--224 (2005; Zbl 1083.47016)]. The main result of the paper under review says that EAE \(\Rightarrow\) SC for arbitrary operators between separable Hilbert spaces. Thus, MC \(\Leftrightarrow\) EAE \(\Leftrightarrow\) SC for arbitrary operators between separable Hilbert spaces.
