In this paper necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained on orthonormal systems such that the Fourier coefficients of continuous functions with respect to these orthonormal systems can be estimated via the moduli of continuity. Particularly it is shown that from any orthonormal system \(\{\varphi_n(x)\}\) satisfying the condition \[ \int\limits_0^1 \varphi_n(x)dx=0 \,\, n=0, 1, \ldots \] it is possible to extract a subsystem \(\psi_k(x)=\varphi_{n_k}(x)\) such that \[ \left(\sum\limits_{k=n}^{\infty}\widehat{\psi}_k^2(f)\right)^{1/2}=O(\omega(1/n, f)) \] for any continuous function \(f(x)\), where \(\omega(1/n, f)\) is the modulus of continuity and \(\widehat{\psi}_k(f)\) are the Fourier coefficients with respect to the system \(\{\psi_k(x)\}\).
