On the residual finiteness of HNN-extensions and generalized free products of finite rank groups. (Q2436091)

The author finds necessary and sufficient conditions for the residual finiteness for HNN-extensions and generalized free products of soluble minimax groups. In particular he proves the following theorem. Let \(A\) and \(B\) be residually finite groups of finite total rank with nontrivial identities. Let \(P\) be the free product of \(A\) and \(B\) with amalgamated subgroup \(H\), where \(H\) is a proper subgroup of finite index in each of the groups \(A\) and \(B\). The group \(P\) is residually finite if and only if \(H\) has a normal subgroup in \(P\) of finite index.
