\textit{P. Cartier} has shown [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 84, 241--249 (1956; Zbl 0072.01605)] that the Campbell-Hausdorff group can be described as the set of grouplike elements in a completed free Lie algebra, where group composition is provided by the celebrated Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. In the paper under review, the author starts from the free associative algebra \(K {\mathbf N}^{\star}\), freely generated by \({\mathbf N}\). Inside it, she considers the free Lie algebra \({\mathcal L}\), freely generated by \(X\). The usual coproduct \(\delta\) is defined on \(K {\mathbf N}^{\star}\), together with a second one \(\kappa\). The set \({\mathcal H}_{\kappa}\) of the unitary bialgebra endomorphisms of \(K {\mathbf N}^{\star}\) which commute with \(\kappa\) is then considered, and it is shown that \({\mathcal H}_{\kappa}\) can be endowed with two operations, such that it is isomorphic to the Campbell-Hausdorff group with respect to the first operation, and it is a near-ring with respect to the two operations. The introduction of a metric over \({\mathcal H}_{\kappa}\) turns useful in the analysis.
