The author study local rings of finite embedding dimension but he doesn't assume that the rings are Noetherian. In sections 2 and 3, he considers dimensions of local rings. The Krull dimension of a Noetherian local ring has several equivalent definitions, but they are not equivalent if the ring is not Noetherian. The author introduces several extensions of Krull dimension for non-Noetherian local rings, for example geometric dimension and cl-dimension. In sections 5--8, ultraproducts and cataproducts are considered. Let \(\{R_w\}\) be a family of local rings such that \(\{\text{emb dim} R_w\}\) is bounded above. Then their ultraproduct \(R_\natural\) is of finite embedding dimension and the cataproduct -- the separated quotient of \(R_\natural\) -- is Noetherian. Let \(\mathbf P\) be a property of local rings, for example, regular and Cohen-Macaulay. A local ring is said to be ultra-\(\mathbf P\) if it is the ultraproduct of local rings satisfying \(\mathbf P\). A local ring is said to be cata-\(\mathbf P\) if its completion is \(\mathbf P\). Furthermore, notions of pseudo-regular and pseudo-Cohen-Macaulay are defined by using equalities of geometric dimension (instead of Krull dimension), embedding dimension and depth like Noetherian case. The author studies their relations. In section 10, he proves that homological conjectures are true for equi-characteristic non-Noetherian local ring of finite embedding dimension. The rest of this paper, devoted to application to Noetherian local rings. It is proved that there is a uniform bound -- depends only on the dimension and multiplicity of ring and module -- of Betti numbers of Cohen-Macaulay modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings. New characterizations of analytically irreducible, (quasi-)unmixed, Cohen-Macaulay, pseudo-rational and F-regular are given. Furthermore, the improved new intersection conjecture is true for mixed characteristic local ring of sufficiently large characteristic.
