Let \(L\) be a Lie bialgebra over a field \(K\) of characteristic not 2 nor 3, with cobracket \(d\). The authors study Lie balgebra extensions of \(L\) to \(L \times K^n\), in particular when \(n=1\). A key tool is that of a biderivation of a Lie bialgebra, i.e., a linear endomorphism which is both a derivation and a coderivation. We state two main results and a corollary. 1. Let \(V\) be an \(n\)-dimensional Lie coalgebra with cobracket \(d'\), \(V^*\) its dual Lie algebra and \(D\) a Lie algebra map from \(V^*\) to the biderivations of \(L\). Then \(L \times V\) is has a Lie bialgebra structure with cobracket \(d''\) defined by \(d''(x+v)=d(x)+\) twice the sum of \(D_i(x)\wedge t_i+d'(v)\), where the \(t_i\) are a basis of \(V\), the \((t_i)^*\) the dual basis of \(V^*\), and \(D_i=D((t_i)^*)\). 2. Let \(L\) be a Lie bialgebra with the \(L\)-invariants of \(L\) wedge \(L\) being \(0\) and the center \(Z(L)=0\), \(V\) a vector space considered as an abelian Lie algebra, and assume that either \(\dim V>1\) and \([L,l]=L\), \(0\) or that \(\dim V=1\). Then all Lie cobrackets on \(L \times V\) are as in the previous result 1. The corollary explains this for the case when \(V\) is one-dimensional. Let \(L \times K\) be a Lie bialgebra with \(L\) as Lie subalgebra and \(K=\langle t\rangle\) as trivial one-dimensional Lie algebra. Assume \(Z(L)=0\) and \(L\) wedge \(L\) has \(L\)-invariants \(0\). Then all Lie cobracket structures on \(L \times K\) are given by pairs \((d,D)\), \(d\) a Lie cobracket on \(L\) and \(D\) a biderivation of \(L\). the Lie cobracket \(d''\) on \(L \times K\) is given by \(d''(x)=d(x)+D(x)\wedge t\) for \(x\) in \(L\), and \(d''(t)=0\). Many interesting examples are given.
