A Jordan domain \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb{R}^2\) is a quasidisk if \(\Omega\) is the image of the unit disk \(D\) under a quasiconformal map \(f\) of the plane which is conformal in \(D\). Thus quasidisks allow the quasiconformal extension of a conformal map \(f : D \rightarrow \Omega\). The authors study conditions for \(\Omega\) such that instead of the quasiconformality of \(f\) it is only required that \(f\) has exponentially integrable dilatation. For this purpose they apply a \(\psi\)-local connectivity condition to \(\Omega\). This condition means that each pair of points in \(B(x,r) \cap \Omega\) can be joined by an arc in \(B(x, \psi^{-1}(r)) \cap \Omega\) and each pair of points in \(\Omega \setminus B(x,r)\) can be joined by an arc in \(\Omega \setminus B(x,\psi(r))\). It is shown that for \(\psi(r) = Cr/(\log^s \log(1/r))\), \(s \in (0, 1/4]\), any conformal map \(f: D \rightarrow \Omega\) can be extended to the plane as a homeomorphism of locally exponential integrable distortion. In the proof a theorem of \textit{S. Zakeri} [Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Math. 33, No. 1, 241--260 (2008; Zbl 1135.30013)] is used. The paper contains several illustrative examples.
