Let \(k\) be a field of odd characteristic. For \(n\in\mathbb N\) and \(\lambda\) a partition of \(n\), let \(S^\lambda\) be the Specht module for the symmetric group algebra \(k\mathfrak S_n\). The author gives a sufficient combinatorial condition on \(\lambda\) for the space of extensions \(H^1(\mathfrak S_n,S^\lambda)=\mathrm{Ext}^1_{\mathfrak S_n}(k,S^\lambda)\) to be trivial. His method is based on a general combinatorial construction of Hemmer as well as on an analysis of James' description of \(H^0(\mathfrak S_n,S^\lambda)\). The author is also able to determine an infinite family of partitions \(\lambda\) for which the \(\mathrm{Ext}^1\) spaces are 1-dimensional.
