Let \(\mathcal{A}\) be an abelian category and \(\mathcal{C}\) an additive full subcategory of \(\mathcal{A}\). \textit{E. E. Enochs} and \textit{O. M. G. Jenda} [Math. Z. 220, No. 4, 611--633 (1995; Zbl 0845.16005)] introduced Gorenstein projective modules for arbitrary modules over a general ring, which is a generalization of finitely generated modules of Gorenstein dimension zero. Also Gorenstein injective modules were introduced as the dual of Gorenstein projective modules. The homological properties of Gorenstein projective and injective modules have been studied by many authors. \textit{S. Sather-Wagstaff} et al. [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 77, No. 2, 481--502 (2008; Zbl 1140.18010)] introduced the Gorenstein category which unifies many concepts (Gorenstein projective modules, Gorenstein injective modules and so on. The author answers affirmatively an open question on the stability of the Gorenstein category \(\mathcal{G(C)}\) posed by Sather-Wagstaff et al. [loc. cit.]. For this he provides a method to construct a proper resolution (resp. coproper resolution) of the first or the last term in a short exact sequence from that of two other terms. He proves also that the category \(\mathcal{G(C)}\) is closed under direct summands and obtains some criteria for computing \(\mathcal{G(C)}\)-\(\dim M\) if it is finite and \(\mathcal{C}\) is self-orthogonal (\(M\) is any object of \(\mathcal{A}\)).
