The authors study the question whether a general hyperplane section of a polarized \(K3\) surface is Brill-Noether general or not. When the Picard number \(\rho\) equals 1, the desired Brill-Noether generality follows directly from a theorem of \textit{R. Lazarsfeld} [J. Differ. Geom. 23, 299--307 (1986; Zbl 0608.14026)]. In the paper the authors assume \(\rho=2\). So let \((S_{n,d,g},H)\) denote a polarized \(K3\) surface of degree \(2n\) and Picard number \(2\) which contains a smooth curve \(C\) of degree \(d\) and genus \(g\). The condition of \((n,d,g)\) for the existence of such \((S_{n,d,g},H)\) was given by \textit{A. L. Knutsen} [Math. Scand. 90, No. 2, 215--231 (2002; Zbl 1021.14013)]. The main result is as follows: if \(g < (d^2-\delta^2)/4n\) holds, then a general hyperplane section of \(S_{n,d,g}\) is a Brill-Noether general curve. Here \(\delta\) is the distance from \(d\) to the nearest integer multiple of \(2n\). In the paper, a precise condition for \(S_{n,d,g}\) to have a reducible or non-reduced hyperplane section is given. The proof is done by reducing the question to some Diophantine inequalities.
