The article under review studies the exceptional locus of O'Grady's six dimensional hyperkähler manifold with respect to the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck compactification. Let \(A\) be a generic abelian surface and let \(M\) be the moduli space of Gieseker-semistable sheaves on \(A\) of rank \(2\), with \(c_1 =0\) and \(c_2 =2\). Let \(X\) be the fiber of the albanese map \(M\rightarrow Alb (M)\) over the origin. O'Grady proved that \(X\) admits a resolution \[ \pi: \widetilde{X} \rightarrow X \] such that \(\widetilde{X}\) is a hyperkähler manifold. There is another birational morphism on \(\widetilde{X}\), namely let \(\varphi\) be the natural morphism from \(M\) to the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck compactification \[ \varphi: M \rightarrow M^{DU} . \] Let \(B_M\) be the exceptional set of \(\varphi\) and let \(\varphi_X\) be the restriction of \(\varphi\) to \(X\). Then the study of the exceptional locus \(B:= B_M \cap X\) plays an important role in well understanding the hyperkähler manifold \(\widetilde{X}\). In this article, the author gives a complete algebraic understanding of the exceptional locus \(B\). The author proved that there exists a contraction \(f: \widetilde{X} \rightarrow X'\) that contracts \(\widetilde{B}\) (which is the strict transform of \(B\) on \(\widetilde{X}\)) to the product of Kummer surfaces \(\mathrm{Kum} (\widehat{A}) \times \mathrm{Kum}(A)\). Moreover, \(f|_{\widetilde{B}}\) is a \(\mathbb{P}^1\)-bundle, and we have \(\pi \circ\varphi_X = f\circ p\), where \(p: X'\rightarrow X^{DU}\) is the natural contraction.
