The paper begins with a review of the literature concerning the uniform approximation of functions defined on compact sets of the complex plane. These results are extended by constructing universal sums associated with Hermite polynomials. Note that a series \[ \sum_{n=0}^{\infty }a_{n}H_{n}(z) \] is called universal if for any compact set \(F\) in the complex plane and any function \(f\in C_{A}(F)\) (here \(C_{A}(F)\) denotes the family of functions which are continuous and analytic at each inner point of \(F\)) there exists a subsequence of the sequence of partial sums of the above series which uniformly converges on \(F\) to \(f\). Here, for any \(n\geq 1\), \(H_{n}(z)\) denotes the Hermite polynomial of order \(n\). The main contribution of the paper is the following: {Theorem. } Let \(\{\lambda _{n}\}_{n=0,1,...}\) be a sequence of integer numbers satisfying the condition \[ \lim_{n\rightarrow \infty }\frac{n}{\lambda _{n}}=\tau ,\quad\tau > \frac{1}{2}. \] Let \(A=\{\alpha _{nv}\}\) be a lower infinite triangular matrix such that \[ \lim_{n\rightarrow \infty }\sum_{v=0}^{n}\alpha _{nv}=1\quad\text{and}\quad\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty }\alpha _{nv}=0\text{ }\forall v. \] Then there exists a series in Hermite polynomials \( \sum_{n=0}^{\infty }a_{n}H_{\lambda _{n}}(z)\) satisfying the following condition: For any compact set \(F\) lying in the disk \(\left| z\right| <R\), \(0<r<\infty \), and for any function \(f\in C_{A}(F)\) there exists a subsequence of positive integer numbers \(\{\lambda _{m_{k}}\}_{k=0,1,\ldots}\), depending on \(F\) and \(f\), such that the sequence \[ S_{\lambda _{m_{k}}}(z)=\sum_{i=0}^{k}\alpha _{\lambda _{m_{k}}\lambda _{m_{i}}}Q_{\lambda _{m_{i}}},\quad k=0,1,\ldots , \] where \(Q_{\lambda _{m_{i}}}(z)=\sum_{n=0}^{m_{i}}a_{n}H_{\lambda _{n}}(z)\), uniformly converges to \(f\) on \(F\).
