A simple contour on the Riemann sphere together with a piecewise-constant matrix on it defines the monodromy \(\pi _1(\text{punctured~shere})\rightarrow GL_n(\mathbb{C})\). The Riemann-Hilbert problem consists in constructing a Fuchsian system on the Riemann sphere with prescribed poles and monodromy. The authors consider the relations between the Riemann-Hilbert monodromy problem and the matrix Riemann-Hilbert boundary-value problem with piecewise-continuous coefficients. They construct the canonical matrix for the boundary-value problem for a piecewise-continuous matrix-function. They obtain also a formula for the calculation of the index.
