The main purpose of the present paper is to generalize \textit{J. P. Murre}'s construction in [J. Reine Angew. Math. 409, 190--204 (1990; Zbl 0698.14032)] of the Albanese and Picard idempotents. Let \(X\) be a complex smooth projective variety of dimension \(d\). Let \(N^iH_{2i}(X,\mathbb{Q})\) denote the image of the cycle class map from the Chow group \(\mathrm{CH}_i(X)\) of cycles of dimension \(i\), and let \(N^iH_{2i+1}(X,\mathbb{Q})\) be the last step of the coniveau filtration on \(H_{2i+1}(X,\mathbb{Q})\). The first main theorem of this paper shows the existence of idempotents \(\Pi_{2i,i}, \Pi_{2d-2i,d-i}\in \mathrm{CH}_d(X\times X)\) such that \(\Pi_{2i,i}={}^t\Pi_{2d-2i,d-i}\) and \((\Pi_{2i,i})_*H_*(X,\mathbb{Q})=N^iH_{2i}(X,\mathbb{Q})\) under the assumption that the pairing \(N^{d-i}H_{2d-2i}(X,\mathbb{Q})\times N^iH_{2i}(X,\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow\mathbb{Q}\) is nondegenerate. The second main theorem constructs the idempotents \(\Pi_{2i+1,i}, \Pi_{2d-2i-1,d-i-1}\in \mathrm{CH}_d(X\times X)\) such that \(\Pi_{2i+1,i}={}^t\Pi_{2d-2i-1,d-i-1}\) and \((\Pi_{2i+1,i})_*H_*(X,\mathbb{Q})=N^iH_{2i+1}(X,\mathbb{Q})\) under the assumption that the pairing \(N^{d-i-1}H_{2d-2i-1}(X,\mathbb{Q})\times N^iH_{2i+1}(X,\mathbb{Q})\rightarrow\mathbb{Q}\) is nondegenerate. The author notices that the nondegeneracy assumptions in these statements are satisfied if the property ``B'' holds true for \(X\).
