    The paper is concerned with boundary value problems for second-order difference-differential equations with variable coefficients on a finite interval \((0,d)\): \[ \begin{aligned} & -\frac{d}{dt} ({R_0}u'(t))+R_2 u(t)=f(t),\quad t\in(0,d),\\ & u(t)=0\quad\text{for } t\in R\setminus (0,d)\end{aligned}\tag{1} \] and \[ \begin{aligned} & -\frac{d^2}{dt^2} ({R_0}u(t))+-\frac{d}{dt} ({R_1}u(t))+R_2 u(t)=f(t),\quad t\in(0,d),\\ & u(t)=0\quad\text{for } t\in R\setminus (0,d),\end{aligned}\tag{2} \] where \(R_i u(t)=\sum\limits_{j=-m}^{m}b_{ij}(t)u(t+j)\), \(i=0,1,2\), \(m\in\mathbb N\), \(b_{ij }(t)\in C^\infty (\mathbb R)\). The paper first presents some properties of the difference operators \(R_i\) on the interval \((0,d)\), and then obtains the uniqueness and smoothness of the generalized solutions for any continuous \(f\) of problems (1) and (2), respectively. The paper mainly focuses on conditions for (1) and (2) to have classical solutions for any \(f\) if the generalized solutions exist.
