A subgroup \(X\) of a group \(G\) is said to be \textit{normal-by-finite} if the core \(X_G\) of \(X\) in \(G\) has finite index in \(X\). It was proved by \textit{J. T. Buckley} et al. [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. A 59, No. 3, 384-398 (1995; Zbl 0853.20023)] that if \(G\) is a locally finite group in which all subgroups are normal-by-finite, then \(G\) is Abelian-by-finite. This result was later extended to groups whose subgroups satisfy some similar, but more general, embedding properties. Recall that a subgroup \(H\) of a group \(G\) is called \textit{permutable} if \(HK=KH\) for each subgroup \(K\) of \(G\), and a subgroup \(X\) is \textit{permutable-by-finite} if it contains a permutable subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) such that the index \(|X:H|\) is finite. It was proved by \textit{M. De Falco} et al. [Commun. Algebra 32, No. 3, 1007-1017 (2004; Zbl 1095.20015); J. Aust. Math. Soc. 81, No. 1, 35-47 (2006; Zbl 1116.20019)] that if \(G\) is a locally finite group and all its subgroups are permutable-by-finite, then \(G\) contains a subgroup of finite index in which all subgroups are permutable. In the paper under review, the author considers groups with only ascendant-by-finite subgroups, where of course a subgroup \(X\) of a group \(G\) is \textit{ascendant-by-finite} if it contains an ascendant subgroup \(Y\) of \(G\) such that the index \(|X:Y|\) is finite. It is proved that if \(G\) is a locally finite group in which all subgroups are ascendant-by-finite, then \(G\) contains a locally nilpotent subgroup of finite index.
