Let \(G\) be a finite group, \(V\) be a finite dimensional faithful complex representation of \(G\) and \(V^L\subset V\) be the open subset of \(V\) on which the \(G\)-action is free. For every open subset \(U\subseteq V^L\) there exist a homotopy class of maps from \(U/G\) to the classifying space \(BG\). This gives a morphism \(\varrho_G\colon H^*(G;\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z)\to\varinjlim_UH^*(U/G;p\mathbb Z)\), \(p\) a prime, whose kernel \(\ker(\varrho_G)\) is independent of \(V\). The stable cohomology of \(G\) with coefficients in \(\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z\) is: \(H^*_s(G;\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z)=H^*(G;\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z)/\ker(\varrho_G)\) [see \textit{F. Bogomolov} and \textit{T. Petrov}, Cent. Eur. J. Math. 9, No. 5, 936-948 (2011; Zbl 1236.20054)]. The aim of this paper is to determine the stable cohomology of alternating groups with mod. \(p\) coefficients, \(p\) an odd prime. (A correction for the case \(p=2\), as pointed out by J. P. Serre, is given [see loc. cit.].)
