The present paper is a continuation of the papers [the last two authors, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 347, No. 1, 235--242 (2008; Zbl 1151.47020); Extr. Math. 24, No. 3, 219--241 (2009; Zbl 1208.47020)]. The authors give a new characterization of closed densely defined semi-Browder operators through the Kato decomposition. They apply the obtained results to give a characterization of Browder's essential approximate point spectrum \(\sigma_{ab}(T)\) and Browder's essential defect spectrum \(\sigma_{db}(T)\): for a closed densely defined operator \(T\) on a Banach space \(X\), Browder's essential approximate point spectrum is exactly the intersection of the approximate point spectra \(\sigma_a(T+F)\) for only those finite rank operators \(F\) which commute with \(T\); if, in addition, \(T^*\) commutes with itself and the resolvent set of \(T\) is not empty, then Browder's essential defect spectrum is exactly the intersection of the defect spectra \(\sigma_d(T+F)\) for only those finite rank operators \(F\) which commute with \(T\).
