If \(f:\mathbb C^2\longrightarrow\mathbb C^2\) is a holomorphic map with \(f(0)=0\), one calls \(0\) a Jordan fixed point of \(f\) if the (complex) differential \(df(0)\) has equal eigenvalues and is not diagonalizable. If \(\lambda\) denotes the (double) eigenvalue of \(df(0)\) one calls \(0\) hyperbolic if \(|\lambda|\neq1\), elliptic if \(|\lambda|=1\) and \(\lambda\) is not a root of unity, respectively parabolic if \(\lambda\) is a root a unity. The present paper studies the existence of parabolic curves or attracting domains at the Jordan fixed point \(0\) of \(f\). A parabolic curve is an injective holomorphic map \(\varphi\) of the unit disc \(\Delta\subset\mathbb C\) to \(\mathbb C^2\) which is continuous on \(\overline\Delta\), such that \(\varphi(1)=0\), \(f(\varphi(\Delta))\subset\varphi(\Delta)\) and the iterates \(f^n(\varphi(\zeta))\to0\) as \(n\to+\infty\) for every \(\zeta\in\Delta\). The main result of the present paper is the following: (1) If \(0\) is an elliptic Jordan fixed point of \(f\) then \(f\) has no parabolic curves. (2) If \(0\) is a nonisolated parabolic Jordan fixed point of \(f\) then \(f\) has no attracting domains and it may or may not have parabolic curves. (3) If \(0\) is an isolated parabolic Jordan fixed point of \(f\) then \(f\) always has parabolic curves but \(f\) may or may not have attracting domains. (4) If \(0\) is a hyperbolic Jordan fixed point of \(f\) then \(f\) or \(f^{-1}\) always has an attracting domain.
