Let \(K\) be a field with \(q\) elements, \(q>2\), let \(n\in\mathbb N\), and let \(\text T_n(K)\) be the group of \(n\times n\) upper triangular matrices over \(K\). Under these assumptions the author obtains the following results: If \(G\) is either the group \(\text T_\infty(K)\) or \(\text T_n(K)\), then \(G\) is generated by the set of all matrices of order \(q-1\). Moreover, every element in \(G\) is a product of four or fewer triangular matrices whose orders are divisors of \(q-1\). The group \(\text{GL}_n(K)\) is generated by matrices of orders \(q-1\). Also, every matrix in \(\text{GL}_n(K)\) is a product of twelve or fewer (upper or lower) triangular matrices whose orders divide \(q-1\). The Vershik-Kerov group \(\text{GL}_{VK}(K)\) is generated by matrices of orders \(q-1\). The group \(\text{GL}_{VK}(K)\) is the group of all infinite matrices of the form \(\left(\begin{smallmatrix} a&b\\ 0&c\end{smallmatrix}\right)\) for some \(a\in\text{GL}_n(K)\) and \(b\in\text T_\infty(K)\).
