A Banach space \(X\) has the \(\lambda\)-bounded approximation property (\(\lambda\)-BAP) if there exists a net of finite rank operators \((S_\alpha)\) on \(X\) with \(\limsup_\alpha \|S_\alpha\| \leq \lambda\) such that \((S_\alpha)\) converges strongly to the identity. If \(S_\alpha S_\beta = S_\beta S_\alpha\) for all indices \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\), then \(X\) has the commuting \(\lambda\)-BAP (\(\lambda\)-CBAP). \textit{P. G. Casazza} and \textit{N. J. Kalton} [Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 158, 49--63 (1991; Zbl 0743.41027)] showed that a separable Banach space with the 1-BAP has the 1-CBAP. This result does not hold for non-separable spaces. For example, \(\ell_\infty\) has the 1-BAP, but does not have the \(\lambda\)-CBAP for any \(\lambda\). In a Banach space with the \(\lambda\)-CBAP, every separable subspace is contained in a complemented separable subspace by a result of Casazza, Kalton and Wojtaszczyk ([\textit{P. G. Casazza}, in: W. B. Johnson (ed.) et al., Handbook of the geometry of Banach spaces. Volume 1. Amsterdam: Elsevier. 271--316 (2001; Zbl 1067.46025)], Theorem 9.3). In the present paper, the authors relax the commuting assumption in the \(\lambda\)-CBAP. A Banach space has the asymptotically \(\lambda\)-commuting BAP (\(\lambda\)-ACBAP) if it has the \(\lambda\)-BAP with an approximating net \((S_\alpha)\) satisfying \(\lim_\alpha \|S_\alpha S_\beta - S_\beta S_\alpha \| = 0\) for all indices \(\beta\). If \(X\) is separable, then \(X\) has the \(\lambda\)-ACBAP if and only if it has the \(\lambda\)-CBAP. It is also shown that for dual spaces \(\lambda\)-ACBAP coincides with \(\lambda\)-BAP. (So \(\ell_\infty\) has the 1-ACBAP.) The main theorem (Theorem 3.1) of this beautiful paper says that in a space with \(\lambda\)-ACBAP every separable subspace is contained in a locally complemented separable subspace with the \(\lambda\)-CBAP. In the final section, the authors extend Theorem 3.1 to more general approximation properties defined by operator ideals. Among other results, they obtain the above-mentioned result of Casazza, Kalton and Wojtaszczyk under weaker assumptions.
