In this paper the authors define the infinite analogous of the hyperplane nets, namely the hyperplane sequences, and study the equidistribution properties of such sequences. The main tool used in their construction is the duality theory for digital sequences recently introduced in [\textit{J. Dick} and \textit{H. Niederreiter}, J. Complexity 25, No. 5, 406--414 (2009; Zbl 1181.11049)]. A general form for the quality function of hyperplane sequences is determined and used to prove a characterization of all hyperplane sequences which are uniformly distributed modulo one (Theorem~6). The authors also give the generator matrices of hyperplane sequences and compare this class of sequences with the Larcher-Niederreiter sequences. Furthermore, the existence of hyperplane sequences with a small value of the quality function is proved and the correspondent upper bound for the star discrepancy is computed.
