The authors investigate the following question: which growth rates are possible for the number of periodic points of a compact group automorphism? The results presented generalize related theorems of \textit{T. Ward} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 133, No. 1, 91--96 (2005; Zbl 1052.37017)]. In the arguments, among other things, a modification of \textit{Yu. V. Linnik}'s theorem is used [Mat. Sb., N. Ser. 15(57), 139--178 (1944; Zbl 0063.03584)], concerning small prime numbers in arithmetic progressions which lie in intervals.
