The authors study strictly singular and finitely strictly singular operators, which can be regarded as a weak version of compact operators in Banach spaces. Several results and several examples are presented. In particular, the authors prove that the Fourier transform from \(L^p(T)\) into \(\ell^{p'}\) is finitely strictly singular if and only if \(p\in (1,2)\). Another result concerns the identity operator from the Hardy space \(H^p\) to the Bergman space \(B^{2p}\), which turns out to be finitely strictly singular for every \(p\geq 1\).
