One proves the existence of solutions \((v_{p}, \lambda_{p})\) of the eigenvalue problem \[ -\text{div}( | \nabla u(x) | ^{p(x)-2} \nabla u(x))=\lambda | u(x) | ^{p(x)-2} u(x), \;u \in W_{0}^{1,p(\cdot)}(\Omega) \] for an appropriate class of exponents \(p(\cdot)\). The first eigenfunction corresponding to an eigenvalue \(\lambda_{p}\), which generalizes the notion of eigenfunction corresponding to the first eigenvalue for the \(p\)-Laplacian (\(p\) constant) is defined and one shows the stability of eigenfunctions with respect to perturbations of the exponent \(p(\cdot)\). Similar results for constant \(p\) were previously obtained by \textit{P. Lindqvist} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 109, No. 1, 157--164 (1990; Zbl 0714.35029)].
