A profinite group \(G\) is positively finitely generated if \(k\) random elements generate \(G\) with positive probability for some \(k.\) Answering a question of Pyber, the reviewer constructed examples of finitely generated just-infinite profinite groups which are not positively finitely generated [\textit{A. Lucchini}, Isr. J. Math. 141, 119-123 (2004; Zbl 1074.20024)]: these examples turn out to be hereditary just-infinite. Every profinite just infinite group is either a branch group or contains an open normal subgroup which is isomorphic to the direct product of a finite number of copies of some hereditarily just-infinite profinite group. A natural question arises to find groups which are just-infinite, not positively finitely generated, and belong to the class of branch groups. The author gives a positive answer constructing a finitely generated just-infinite profinite group which is branch but not positively finitely generated. His construction is based on the concept of an infinitely iterated wreath product.
