Let \(X\) be a metric space with the weak homogeneity property, \(\Omega\) an open proper and non empty subset of \(X\) such that all balls contained in \(\Omega\) are connected sets. Define \[ \mathcal{F}_\beta=\{B=B(x_B,r_B):\;x_B\in \Omega,\;r_B\leq \beta\,d(x_B, \Omega^c)\},\quad \beta\in(0,1), \] where \(B(x_B,r_B)\) is the ball with center \(x_B\) and radius \(r_B\). Assume that \(\mu\) is a Borel measure on \(\Omega\) satisfying the doubling property on \(\mathcal{F}_\beta\), namely, there exists a positive constant \(C_\beta\) such that for all balls \(B\in \mathcal{F}_\beta\), \[ \mu(B)\leq C_\beta \mu(B/2). \] The maximal operator \(M_{\mu,\beta}\) is defined as \[ M_{\mu,\beta}f(x)=\sup_{x\in B\in \mathcal{F}_\beta}\frac1{\mu(B)}\int_B|f|\,d\mu,\quad x\in \Omega, \] for all \(f\in L^1_{\text{loc}}(\Omega,d\mu)\). It is proved in this paper that \(M_{\mu,\beta}\) is of weak type \((1,1)\) with respect to \(w\,d\mu\) if and only if the weight \(w\) satisfies \(w\in A^\beta_1(d\mu)\), and \(M_{\mu,\beta}\) is bounded on \(L^p(\Omega, w\,d\mu)\) with \(p\in(1,\infty)\) if and only if \(w\in A^\beta_p(d\mu)\), where \(A^\beta_p(d\mu)\) is the Muckenhoupt weight class on \(\Omega\) with respect to \(\mathcal{F}_\beta\). As an application, the authors prove an interior Sobolev type estimate for appropriate solutions of \(\Delta^m u=f\).
