Using his concept of an almost subbase, the author gives an internal characterization of Eberlein compacta, answering the question of when a topological space admits a compactification that is Eberlein compact. Specifically, it is shown that a compact Hausdorff space \(X\) is an Eberlein compact space if and only if \(X\) has a \(\sigma\)-strongly point-finite almost subbase. Similar characterizations of Corson compacta, uniform Eberlein compacta, and \(n\)-uniform Eberlein compacta are given. It is shown that a complete Boolean algebra \(A\) is isomorphic to the algebra of regular closed subsets of a metrizable space (or a zero-dimensional Eberlein compact space) if and only if \(A\) has a \(\sigma\)-disjointed dense set. This provides a new proof of Ponomarev's Theorem [\textit{V. I. Ponomarev}, Russ. Math. Surv. 21, No. 4, 87--114 (1966); translation from Usp. Mat. Nauk 21, No. 4(130), 101--132 (1966; Zbl 0169.54203)], which answered Question 72 of Birkhoff's Lattice Theory [\textit{G. Birkhoff}, Lattice theory. Third (new) ed. American Mathematical Society (AMS). Providence, R.I.: American Mathematical Society (1967; Zbl 0153.02501)].
