Define the quantities \[ \delta(f)=\inf\{\deg(h):h\in\mathbb{R}[X], \;hf \in \mathbb{R}_{>0}[X]\} \] and \[ \delta_0(f)=\inf\{\deg(h):h\in \mathbb{R}[X],\;hf \in\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}[X]\}. \] Due to \textit{E. Meissner} [Math. Ann. 70, 223--235 (1911; JFM 42.0459.11)] and \textit{Durand} (see Theorem 2 in \textit{J.-P. Borel} [Proc. Conf. in Honour of Alain Durand, Paris/Fr. 1988, Lect. Notes Math. 1415, 97--115 (1990; Zbl 0723.12001)]) it is known that \(\delta(f)\) (\(\delta_0(f)\), respectively) is finite if and only is \(f\) has no negative, (no non-positive, respectively) roots. The main result of the paper under review is the determination of polynomials \(h\) of minimal degree such that \(hf\) has positive (non-negative, respectively) coefficients, where \(f\) is a quadratic polynomial with negative discriminant. Several examples are presented to illustrate the results of the paper.
