The paper deals with the distribution of resonances of the Laplacian for a class of infinite volume hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. Let \(\mathbb{H}^2\) be the hyperbolic plane with the usual metric of constant sectional curvature \(-1\) and let \(X=\Gamma\backslash\mathbb{H}^2\) be a convex co-compact hyperbolic surface. Assume that \(X\) is not a hyperbolic cylinder. Let \(\Delta_X\) be the associated Laplace-Beltrami operator on functions. The author shows the density of resonances of \(\Delta_X\) in rectangles \(\{\sigma\leq\Re(s)\leq\delta,|\Im(s)|\leq T\}\) is less than \(O(T^{1+\tau(\sigma)})\) as \(T\rightarrow\infty\) for \(\tau(\sigma)<\delta\) and \(\sigma>\delta/2\). This improves a previous upper bound of \textit{M. Zworski} [Invent. Math. 136, No. 2, 353--409 (1999; Zbl 1016.58014)]. \S1 is an introduction to the matter at hand, \S2 deals with the transfer operator and the Selberg zeta function, \S3 treats some pointwise estimates, \S4 applies Littlewood's lemma, \S5 derives a lower bound, and \S6 deals with mean square estimates.
