A generalized derivation of a ring \(R\) is a pair \((D,d)\) of maps in \(\text{End}((R,+))\) so that \(d\in\text{der}(R)\) and for all \(x,y\in R\), \(D(xy)=D(x)y+xd(y)\). Let \(R\) be a prime ring with generalized derivations \((D,d)\) and \((G,g)\), nonzero right ideal \(I\), maximal right (Utumi) quotient ring \(U\), and extended centroid \(C\). The authors characterize \(D\) and \(G\) when for a noncentral, multilinear polynomial \(f(X)=f(x_1,\ldots,x_n)\in C\{X\}\), \(D(f(X))f(X)-f(X)G(f(X))\) is \(C\)-valued on \(I^n\). Their result states that either: i) \(D\) and \(G\) are inner generalized derivations on \(R\) so that for some \(a,b,p\in U\) and \(\alpha\in C\), \(D(x)=(a+p)x-xp\), \(G(x)=bx\) and \((a-b)I=0=(a+p-\alpha)I\); ii) \(R\) satisfies the standard polynomial identity \(S_4\) and three possible descriptions of \(D\) and \(G\), as in i) above, are given; or iii) \(\text{Soc}(RC)\neq 0\), and for some \(e^2=e\in\text{Soc}(RC)\), \(eR=I\) and also either \([f(X),x_{n+1}]x_{n+2}\) is an identity for \(I\), \(\text{char }R=2\) and \(S_4(x_1,\ldots,x_4)x_5\) is an identity for \(I\), or \([f(X)^2,x_{n+1}]x_{n+2}\) is an identity for \(I\) and \(D\) and \(G\) are specifically described in terms similar to those in i) above.
