In this interesting paper the authors review applications of symmetric spaces to the numerical analysis of differential equations. In section 2 they give an elementary introduction to symmetric spaces and Lie triple systems following the approach of Loos. This line of thought is continued in sections 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3 focusing on polar decompositions and polar coordinates. In subsections 3.4 to 3.8 the authors review and investigate various situations in the numerical analysis of differential equations where the structure of a symmetric space is hidden. More precisely, in subsection 3.4 they focus on symmetries and reversing symmetries of differential equations. In subsection 3.5 they introduce self-adjoint numerical schemes as a symmetric space. In the following subsection 3.6 they make the connection to generalized Scovel projections, then in subsection 3.7 to Thue-Morse sequences and in subsection 3.8 to Yoshida-type compositions.
