In the first part of this paper, the author shows that every monotonically normal space is dually scattered of rank \(\leq 2\). He continues by introducing the notion of a generalized tree with the Sorgenfrey topology (a generalized Sorgenfrey topology). Among many other interesting results the main result says that a space \(X\) is monotonically normal and homeomorphic to some generalized tree with the Sorgenfrey topology if and only if \(X\) is a topological sum such that each factor is homeomorphic to a linearly ordered set with the Sorgenfrey topology. In addition, the above statements are equivalent to conditions (c1) and (c2) where (c1) means that \(X\) is homeomorphic to some linearly ordered set with the Sorgenfrey topology, and (c2) means that \(X\) is a topological sum having at least two, but finitely many factors, and each factor is homeomorphic to an ordinal of uncountable cofinality.
