Let \(X\) be a complex projective manifold, and let \(L\) be an ample line bundle on \(X\). The effective non-vanishing conjecture and Fujita's conjecture make very precise statements about the global sections of the adjoint bundles \(K_X+jL\) where \(j \in \mathbb N^*\). The goal of the paper under review is to classify those polarized pairs \((X, L)\) with \(\dim X=3\) such that \(h^0(X, K_X+2L)\) has the minimal possible value. If \(K_X+L\) is pseudoeffective, the author showed in an earlier paper [Int. J. Math. 17, No. 7, 761--789 (2006; Zbl 1100.14003)] that \(h^0(X, K_X+2L) \geq 3\). In this paper he proves that equality holds if and only if \(X\) is a Calabi-Yau threefold and \(L\) satisfies \(L^3=1\) and \(h^0(X, L)=1\). If \(K_X+L\) is not pseudoeffective one has \(h^0(X, K_X+2L) \geq 2\) and the author gives a complete and effective classification of the case when \(h^0(X, K_X+2L) = 2\).
