Let \(F\) be a field of characteristic \(p>0\), and let \(H\) be a cyclic \(p\)-subgroup of a finite group \(G\). Moreover, let \(W\) be the direct sum of all indecomposable \(FH\)-modules, and let \(M\) be the induced \(FG\)-module \(FG\otimes_{FH}W\). The author shows that \(H\) is a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\) if and only if the endomorphism algebra \(R:=\text{End}_{FG}(M)\) has finite global dimension. Moreover, in this case the global dimension of \(R\) is at most 2. It follows that every finitely generated \(FG\)-module has a finite resolution by modules in \(\text{add}(M)\). The paper also contains versions of the main result for blocks and for subgroups that are not necessarily cyclic.
